Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants build nests in damp wood by chewing out areas with their mandibles. They do not consume the wood like termites do and you generally find sawdust piles beside where they have made the nest. The main carpenter ants in Canada are the black carpenter ants and they are completely brownish black. They live in colonies that comprise hundreds of ants and can have more than one queen. All the worker ants are sterile females, but the colonies have many males and females that do reproduce. At the age of reproduction both male and females have wings. When carpenter ants invade a structure they sometimes set up a smaller satellite colony which is how they can get to be a big problem if they are around or near your home.

Signs you may have carpenter ants are;

  • You’ve noticed small sawdust piles in or around your home

  • You can see the carpenter ants usually in a damp location like under the kitchen sink

  • You’ve seen winged ants trying to escape your house usually in the spring time

  • Ants are more active at night and you may be able to hear a dry rustling noise if the house is quiet enough
